Manolito Gafotas is a children's novel written by the Spanish writer Elvira Lindo and illustrated by Emilio Urberuaga. The novel has been translated into English as Manolito Four-Eyes. This is definitely my favorite among Manolito books. I have good memories with it and I can recall that I could not stop laughing while reading this. Summary: Summer has finally come, but Manolito is stuck at home while all of his friends head off on vacation.

To fill the time, Manolito and his little brother go to Hangman's park or the swimming pool. The summer seems to be boring until Manolito makes a new friend, Mustard. The two of them begin to play games together and when Big Ears comes back it is a little awkward trying to find time for all of Manolito's friends.

He is growing a little older and now is learning how to balance things without giving up one important thing for another. My thoughts: I've enjoyed every part of this series. They are all entertaining with a fair amount of laughs.

I especially like Manolito's voice. He is witty and intelligent while still sounding like a child. When he uses sophisticated vocabulary, he usually tells a story about how he knows things. Generally, this is a safe book to pick up and read to a child between 2nd-6th grade without worrying about content or fun. Even adults will get a kick out of Manolito's tales. This is the first Manolito Four-Eyes book I've read, and it will probably be the last.

Name calling disguised as nicknames was a bit over the top; and the humor was stereotypical, cliche, and flat. I found myself wondering who the audience was. Readers looking for "physical humor" and a character with a strong voice may find a friend in Manolito. Dec 19, Richard Mccaffery rated it really liked it.

This series of books are sweet and funny. They make for a good read and serve as a distraction for your mind, if only briefly, from all the bad news we're exposed to in the day to day. Plus I get to learn lots of Spanish slang and expressions. I recommend it for Spanish learners. It's not a difficult read, makes you smile and you learn some words and phrases you won't find in any dictionary. Shelves: childrens-realistic-fiction. Similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but in Spain with fewer illustrations.
